What is a Hub?

A hub is device that provides a common connection point for computers and other networked devices, such as printers, in an local area network. Each port is dedicated to a physical office location. Smart or Managed hubs or switching hubs are often used to improve performance by managing traffic.

What is a Router?

A device that determines the next network point to which a data packet should be forwarded enroute to its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and determines which way to send each data packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. Routers create or maintain a table of the available routes and use this information to determine the best route for a given data packet.

What is a Firewall?

A Firewall is a hardware with embedded security software that is installed between the internal networks and the Internet. A firewall allows only specific kinds of Internet traffic to flow in and out of the internal network. This protects the internal network from intruders or hackers who might try to use the Internet to break into those systems.

What is a Switch?

Much like routers, switches split large networks into small segments, decreasing the number of users sharing the same network resources and bandwidth. This helps prevent data collisions and reduces network congestion, increasing network performance.
